Assignment due October 21st, 2012

Time to talk about China....

Specifically, General Aviation in China.

In July of this year, Hawker Beechcraft sold its business jet and general aviation operations to a Chinese aerospace manufacturer - Superior Aviation Beijing Co, Ltd.. This is not the only US general aviation manufacturing company to utilize China for support.

Additionally, China's general aviation industry, after being somewhat nonexistent, is in a period of rapid growth.

For this week's assignment, answer the following questions:

1) In addition to Hawker Beechcraft, discuss another US general aviation manufacturer with ties to China. Explain the details - who, what is the relationship, why did the relationship develop and any ramifications to the US  general aviation industry.

2) What are the reasons for this "rapid growth" in the Chinese general aviation industry?

3) What is the relationship between these US general aviation manufacturers with ties to China and the growth in the Chinese general aviation industry?

4) Most importantly, what does all the above mean for career opportunities in the US general aviation sector?

Have a blast!

Assignment due October 7th

Regionals...

Ok, I know I said that I would stay away from "airlines" this week, but in light of Izzy coming to speak to class next week about her experiences as a regional pilot, I felt that this would be a good week to explore the topic of regional air carriers.

On September 29th, Comair seized operations. Please answer the following questions:

1) Give the history of Comair. When/Where/Why/How did they start? Have they been an independent carrier or owned?
2) Why did Comair seize operations...what are the reasons for their downfall?
3) What is the overall financial status of the regional airline industry? Why is it changing?
4) As mainline airlines restructure their use of the regional carriers, what, if any, opportunities may open  up for regionals?

Final, unrelated question:
Pilots answer #1. Management answer #2.

1) Look up one regional carrier that is still operating. Are they hiring any pilot positions? If not, when was the last time that they hired? What is the starting pay of an first officer? Please provide a link to this information.
2) Look up one regional carrier that is still operating. Are the hiring any management positions? If so, which positions? If not, what would be possible management positions at the company in the future? Please provide a link to this information.

As always, have fun!

Assignment due September 30th

So far we have discussed ways to "level the global playing field" for the US airlines and the multiple ramifications of the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Act of 2010. One common thread between these two subjects is money. In terms of leveling the global playing field, one question raised is how do we maintain a high level of standards while not increasing the consumer's ticket price. One money-related question in the discussion of the ramifications of the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Act is how can there be an increase in training requirements, including more required hours, without increasing starting pay at the regionals? According to management at the regionals, ticket prices would have to be raised to account for an increase in pilot pay and that may be "unacceptable" to the general flying public.

So the topic this week is more philosophical than research-based (although you will probably need to do some historical research; there is still the "one link" requirement).

Answer the following:

-Should the ability to take a commercial flight on an airline to get from point A to point B be affordable to most of the public? Or should it be a luxury? For example, there are many locations which the cost of flying on an airline to that location is the equivalent of or even cheaper than driving to that location. Therefore, if you can afford to drive, you can afford to fly.

-Why is it that you can now often fly on a route for cheaper than or equivalent to the cost of driving that route? What's changed (there obviously may be multiple factors)?

-Let's say that the airlines did raise their prices, making flying commercially less accessible to the general public. What would the industry look like? How would this change the way airlines are structured?

Please feel free to add any additional thoughts.
Have fun!

Assignment due September 16th, 20120

Hello all,

This assignment is Sunday due September 16, 2012 at 11:59PM.

You were given an article in class titled "How Can We Compete - 7+ Ways to Level the Playing Field". This article addresses several "threats" to the US aviation industry, specifically US airlines, and lays out ways to help the airlines to compete on a global level.

From the article, choose one of the following suggestions to expand upon:

-Reform aviation tax policy to help increase the international competitiveness of US airlines.
-Maintain the current US foreign ownership control and foreign cabotage restrictions.
-Protect US flying.
-Improve safety and security standards at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
-Curb oil speculation.

For ONE of the above topics, answer the following questions:

1) What is the current situation? For example, if you choose "Reform aviation tax policy to help increase the international competitiveness of US airlines", address (in detail) the current policy.
2) Expand on the suggestion (i.e. give more detail - detail beyond what was in the article or discussed in class) and state any possible barriers to the implementation of that suggestion. For example, if you choose "Improve safety and security standards at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)", what are the specific standards that should be improved and why?
3) Do you agree that this has the potential to be an effective and feasible solution? Why or why not? Don't forget to look at the logistics of implementation.
4) Define a correlation between implementing this suggestion and job security/creation in the aviation industry.

In addition to answering the above questions, don't forget to include a link (to a reputable site), integrating information from that link into your discussion. Also, comment on three of your classmates blogs and send an email to me with your comments and the title of the blogs which you posted them to.

The post is due on Sunday. You have until Wednesday before the start of class to write and email comments.

Grading criteria for blog posts is located on the back of your syllabus. My biggest advice - remember that this is a 400 level course. Write and research accordingly. I'm really looking for original or critical thought. The feedback I have received from past students who have been given full credit for their posts is that this assignment takes between 2.5-3 hours per week.

Please contact me with any questions.
As always, have fun!

Introduction

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to AVT 422 Senior Seminar! My goal in this course is to give you some practical and useful tools that hopefully will give you an edge as you venture into your aviation careers...or any careers for that matter.  One way I have decided to do this is through the social media of a blog. I know a several people in the aviation world who have utilized blogs to advance their careers in various ways. Like other social media tools, (such as Facebook and Twitter) writing, reading and commenting on blogs allows you to create a social network of aviation professionals that you may not have otherwise created. Also, this is yet another thing you can put on your resume - "aviation blog writer". I'm not kidding. As long as you keep the topics professional, many employers would be quite impressed with this initiative.

Each week I will assign an aviation topic - which I will post on this blog. In addition to career development, I also use senior seminar as a course to discuss current and global topics in aviation.  Each week you will be required to do the following:

1) Write a post about the topic, approximately 3-5 paragraphs. I will usually provide a list of 4-5 questions that you need to answer through research of the topic. In addition, opinions are encouraged. Proper grammar and spelling is expected - remember that all of your class peers (and, if you wish, other aviation professionals and employers) will have access to your blog. Posts must be up by the Sunday before class to allow time for peers to read and comment.

2) You must include at least one link about the topic in your blog.  The link must be to a reputable site. Be sure to provide an introduction to your link.

3) Each week, in addition to your own post, you are required to read and comment on at least 3 of your classmates' blogs. Please email me these comments (indicating which blog they were posted to) by Wednesday before class to receive full credit.

4) I will give feedback on your post each week as a comment. Likewise, feel free to leave my comments about the assignment.

5) Come to class each week prepared to have an in-depth discussion of the topic.

Have fun! Seriously, I think you will enjoy this.
